What is a Birth Doula? How can a Birth Doula help me?

Many women have asked this same question. There are moms who have already have several children who ask "where was this Doula when I was pregnant". Surprisingly Doulas have been around for ages. Doula means " one that mothers the new mother". At a time when there is very little support and things can become somewhat overwhelming, this special time can make even the most put together woman feel uneasy. A Doula can be a great source of support and grounding. She can help you make sound, informed choices, she can help you to relax when the fear of the unknown, the sterile hospital, the thought of experiencing pain, or the new role of motherhood seem too much to put on your spouses shoulders. Dads-to-be have an important role during the labor and delivery but this also is an overwhelming time for them as well. Many husbands are concerned for you the mom and the baby and don't always have a clear mind in order to provide the kind of comfort and support needed. It helps to have someone
knowledgable, supportive, focused and on your team.

Here is a list of some examples of what a Doula can do for you during labor and delivery:

meet with you in the comfort of your home - during pregnancy and early stages of labor
help you put together a birth plan
educate you on the latest terminology, technology and choices you have throughout labor and birth
role playing birth scenarios, during prenatal visit
offer 24 hour email support
massage you while your in labor - feet, hands, head, back
help you try different relaxation techniques
offer breastfeeding support
relieve dad during labor when he needs breaks

Studies have shown:

Women have shorter labors
Fewer interventions
Fewer c-sections
Healthier babies
Breastfeeding success
Less postpartum depression
